Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Review
The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is not one of the latest Samsung phones that flips or folds, so why does it cost $1400? And, is it worth it? Let’s find out.
The number one reason why this price seems a little easier to swallow is because of its camera; The camera that comes with S20 Ultra is the most powerful camera in any of Samsung’s flagship.
Fortunately, S20 Ultra is not all about a powerful camera; it is a full package. In $1400, you can expect tons of features that make this phone so future-proof. The beautiful and massive 6.9-inch Ultra HD screen and the 5G support are a few of the many things you will get to see on this phone.
However, you can’t just call this phone perfect. S20 Ultra has its own share of disadvantages. Firstly, you will no longer see a headphone jack. Secondly, the rear camera bump is quite large and does not feel or look great. Besides, the 6.9-inch gigantic screen is too much for some people who will definitely prefer a considerably compact and cheaper phone, such as S20.
From that screen and the megapixels and that price, everything on Samsung S20 Ultra is Ultra and supersized. However, this phone is not quite for everyone.
With all the features you will get in S20 Ultra, is it the best phone money can buy? Let’s dig deeper.
The design has not entirely changed when you see other Samsung phones such as Note 10 and S10 – The screen extends to the edge of the phone, the edges are smoothly curved.
However, you can notice some subtle and significant changes in the design; for example, the camera bump is quite large at the back of the phone, and there’s a circular cutout at the center top of the phone.
One could say that its design is quite gorgeous; however, S20 Ultra comes in only two colors, which are incredibly boring and dull – Cosmic Black and Cosmic Gray.
If you want other interesting colors that Samsung has to offer, then you should consider buying S20, which comes in Cloud Blue and Cloud Pink; these colors are, however, absent for the S20 Ultra customers. No matter you buy the gray one or the black one, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is a serious fingerprint magnet.
Samsung deserves some credit to keep this phone under 7.7 ounces, which is even lighter than iPhone 11 pro that weighs around 7.97 ounces with an even smaller battery. Thumbs up for Samsung for keeping its weight “Ultra-light” as well.
Best Camera Phone on the Market?
After lagging behind its competitors in the camera game, Samsung has finally taken a big leap forward. Thanks to S20 Ultra, Samsung is now leading the charts.
The ugly and gigantic bump on the back of S20 Ultra contains Samsung’s most powerful quad-camera system: a 12MP ultra-wide angle, a 108MP wide-angle, 48MP telephoto lens and then there is what Samsung calls “Space Zoom” which is capable of 100x magnification! You can also find a 40MP front-facing camera at the top center of the screen.
Apart from this, you can record an 8k video at 24 fps from your S20 Ultra, which is a big thing that makes this phone so future-ready.
With these cameras, you can expect some perfect and high-detailed pictures and the 100x digital zoom is just the icing on the cake. However, we have discovered some flaws in the cameras as well. The camera tends to aggressively smooth out the faces.
Secondly, the ability of S20 Ultra to capture 10x lossless and up to 100x digital zoom can be a bit frustrating, since just a minor shake can ruin your photo. That is why it is suggested to use a tripod for that purpose.
This year Samsung has made significant improvements in the display department as well. All three variants of S20 are equipped with 120Hz panels. What’s different in Samsung S20 Ultra’s display?
Samsung gave this phone a 6.9-inch Ultra HD, AMOLED display, which is set at 2400 by 1080 pixels with an aspect ratio of 20.5:9. The screen is super sharp even at medium settings, which is phenomenal.
The refresh rates can be set at 60Hz, which is sufficient for regular day-to-day use, or you can set it at 120Hz, which is better when you are gaming.
Just like all the other variants, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra also features a brand-new Snapdragon 865 processor by Qualcomm, which is capable of delivering faster performance while reducing the power consumption.
That CPU is connected with 12GB of memory and 128GB of storage; however, you can also get the S20 Ultra that comes with 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage. You also get the option of expanding your storage up to 1Tb with the help of a microSD card.
The phone is well-equipped with an enormous 5000 mAh battery, which is so far the biggest battery in the Samsung S series. The question is, will the battery be able to survive a whole day with all the features such as 120Hz refresh rate and 5G connectivity?
At 60Hz, the phone lasted around 12 hours, while its competitor iPhone 11 Pro also lasted the same amount; however, the Iphone does not feature a 5G modem or a 120Hz refresh rate.
OUR VERDICT – Should you buy it?
Just like its name, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is Ultra in every department. With super display, fast processor, excellent camera, 5G connectivity, and much more, you can expect pretty much every possible feature you want on your smartphone.
